Volunteer Roles

Breakout is, at its heart, an amazing community of gamers. Our goal is to offer the Breakout community the opportunity to play and explore the very best of what tabletop gaming has to offer. We could not do that without the community’s continuing support, particularly the many volunteers who keep Breakout running smoothly!

Depending on the role, general volunteers and game hosts can expect to sign up for a four-hour shift or run four hours of games per day. Individuals who volunteer for at least 16 hours during Breakout will receive a four-day pass. Anyone volunteering fewer than 16 hours will receive a day pass for each day they volunteer for 4 or more hours.

Check out the many opportunities below to see if there is one that interests you!

General Volunteers

General volunteers help many aspects of the con run smoothly. Opportunities here include: pre-con set-up, working at the registration desk or indie book store, teaching games in the board game hall or running the board game library, staffing the RPG HQ table, assisting the team running the panels, supporting other guests as a hospitality ambassador, and/or post-con clean-up. Sign-up to be a General Volunteer here.

Board Games

Board game hosts are an essential part of the Breakout experience as they help us expand the variety of games on offer at the con! They act as facilitators, running tabletop games that any Breakout guest can sign-up for in advance.

We welcome all types of tabletop games, from old favourites to the newest titles!

Board game hosts are expected to foster an inclusive and welcoming environment at their table. They must bring their own copy of the tabletop game they expect to play and have a strong working knowledge of the game's rules.

We continue to add a wide variety of board game titles to our lineup. If you are interested in submitting a board game event for consideration, please fill out this form.

Roleplaying Games

Breakout is proud to host one of the largest and most diverse collections of roleplaying events offered at any convention in Canada. We’re interested in everything ranging from classic, traditional systems to the newest games fresh on the market.

If you are interested in facilitating a roleplaying game at Breakout, please fill out this form.

Badges for Volunteers

As in past years, Badges will be compensated depending on the number of games you facilitate. Games can vary in length, from two to four hours for roleplaying games and two to six for board games. Running game events totaling at least 16 hours of volunteering time will earn you a weekend pass. If you’re running less than four games, you will be given a pass for each day you facilitate 4 or more hours.

There is a limited number of spaces for game facilitators. Preference will go to volunteers participating in the organized play campaigns, and those offering to facilitate games that best fit our vision of the convention.

We would love to see a focus on new games, games with a strong tie to popular culture, and games designed by minorities and marginalized voices in the game design community.

If your game isn’t accepted, we will let you know soon after.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old to participate.

If you have any questions, or run into any problems submitting your form to volunteer, please contact David at davidk@breakoutcon.com
